Book Club – Guided Reading
One of the many ways that reading is taught at Acton is through guided reading sessions or "Book Club". Book club takes place for approximately 20 minutes every day in KS2 and for approximately 10 minutes in KS1 as reading is also taught within the daily phonics sessions. Decoding, Prosody(fluency and intonation) and comprehension is developed through book club sessions.
Within book club sessions, KS2 pupils will focus on fortnightly themes or genres for example adventure texts, poetry and non-fiction. As part of this process children should engage with the text at least three times. Staff may select different books for different ability groups or may use a text that is accessible for all pupils within the class. Children are assessed each half term using accelerated reader and teacher assessments to assign them to a book club group and this is reviewed every half term. Children have a variety of purposeful reading activities during book club sessions it is not a carousel or a combination of holding tasks. Throughout the week, children will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills through a variety of pre reading, independent and post reading tasks as well as teacher led activities.
Children in KS1 follow a similar programme but for approx 10 minutes as those still following the phonics programme have a a daily reading session as part of their daily phonics sessions.
