Reading

"The more you read, the more you will know, the more you learn, the more places you'll go." – Dr Seuss

At Acton we aim to develop a love of reading in all of our children. We believe that reading is the key that unlocks the whole curriculum so the ability to efficiently decode, use inference, develop prosody and comprehension is essential. Reading is embedded across all areas of the curriculum. Reading is taught from the moment the children start with us. We use the Read Write Inc phonics programme to develop early readers. Class teachers and teaching assistants are well trained and deployed effectively to best meet the needs of the children and ensure continuity. See our phonics web page for further information.

Reading is taught through, whole class reading sessions, book club sessions, phonic sessions and independent sessions.  All children are provided with books to read at home as well as in school.  Our homework policy was amended to ensure that reading at home was given priority and this is encouraged by the use of reading points for reading at home. Children in KS1 take home a variety of books depending on their phonic stage. – Ditty books, Green books and as well as the Read Write Inc. Book Bag Books. Once the children complete the phonics programme they move onto Accelerated reader. Children select books at the appropriate level based on teacher assessments and half termly Star reader tests using Accelerated reader. Once children finish a book they complete a star reader quiz to assess their understanding of the text.

Pupil voice enables staff to gain the children's perspective on reading.
