Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 page.

Mrs Torrie and Mrs Rogers share the teaching of year 2.
Keep an eye on the class page for any letters that we send out. You can also follow the school social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date with the latest news and events.

Homework
Your child now has their own personalised login details for 'Purple Mash', 'Spelling Shed', 'Doodle Maths', 'Times Table Rockstars' and Google classroom. Children should read once a day at home.

Communication
If you have any questions, please write a note in your child's communication diary. You can also contact us via the school office or on the Year 2 email address: year2@actonceprimary.net We will endeavour to support you and your child the best we can.

English
In English we will be enjoying the fantastic story of 'Jack and the Baked Beanstalk'. The children will be writing letters to Jack to encourage him to or not to climb up the beanstalk to meet the giant. They will also be writing their own version of the story too.

Reading
We are currently reading books that are shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway award. We are focusing on a new book each week. We also have a selection of Jack and the Beanstalk books for children to enjoy.

Please make sure you're reading with your child each night and sign their communication diary when you've heard them read. Two RWI books will go home with your child each Monday and will need to be returned to school on a Friday to be cleaned over the weekend. Children on Accelerated Reader will change their own books after they complete the quiz in school. Children should be aiming to do at least a book a week on Accelerated Reader (dependent on book length).

Linked to reading Year 2 are also shadowing the Kate Greenaway Medal Awards. This means that we are exploring some of the books that are shortlisted this year, reviewing them and finding different ways to respond to them. For some books the authors have even left us challenges to complete linked to their stories. In June we will vote for the book that we feel should be the winner.

Acton's Avid Readers

Maths
In Maths this half term, we will first be learning about time. Children in year 2 are expected to recognise o clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times before moving on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Please try to support your child with this at home as it can be a tricky concept for many children to grasp. Following this, we will be learning about mass before revisiting fractions and calculation methods.

Every child in Y2 has a Doodle Maths login to help them further practice their maths skills. They can access Doodle Maths here. We encourage the children to access Doodle Maths for 10 minutes each day.

Science
This term in Science our topic is 'Plants'. We will be learning about local plants, growing our own and finding out what a botanist is. Please encourage children to take a closer look at the plants around them at home, perhaps they could even help in the garden.

Topic
This half term our topic is 'How does your garden grow'. This will include exploring some of the history of Kew Gardens and the famous faces that are linked to it.

RE
This half term we will be exploring the Christian Value of respect and learning about forgiveness.

Computing
Our computing will be learning about spreadsheets.
